English PEN's Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) and the John Armitage Memorial Trust (JAM) are holding a joint fundraiser in honour of persecuted writers. The excellent Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge, will perform two JAM commissions - Thoughts Scribbled on a Blank Wall (lyrics by John McCarthy) and No Answer (lyrics by Chris Abani) - and Michael Tippett's amazing Five Spirituals from Child of Our Time. These performances will be interspersed with readings from the work of persecuted Burmese writers, including English PEN Honorary Members Aung San Suu Kyi and Zargana, performed by comedians Jo Brand, Alexander Armstrong and Reece Shearsmith, poet Ruth Padel and TV chef Clarissa Dickson Wright.

Being aware of that:(1) Bangla-Mynamar relationship is being strained by the infantile disorders of Myanmar ultranationalist democracy. Maritime border dispute, border fencing, and Rohingya issues are the roadblocks in the advancement of friendship and cooperation between the two countries while understanding and joint effort are in urgent and immediate need to face the regional problems being posed by the global warming and rising sea level. Coming years will mark the days of struggle for survival for both Bangladesh and Myanmar.

RELEASE DAW SUU IMMEDIATELY

 

We strongly denounce the new charges against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. SPDC is very unjust to accuse her of violating the law following US national John Yettaw swam to her lakeside house. Daw Suu did not invite John but she told him to leave her home. The accident was merely breach of security where the authorities watched over her house.

The Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) welcomes Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni’s Statement at Bali Process strongly refuting Burmese Deputy Minister's stand on the origin of the Rohingyas. She stressed the need for a multilateral approach by the region to solve the Rohingya problem.

European Parliament resolution on the situation of Burmese refugees in Thailand

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees of 1951 and to the Protocol on the Status of Refugees of 1967,

–  having regard to the joint statement by the Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) and the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) of 26 January 2009,

–  having regard to Rule 115(5) of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas it has been reported that around 1000 Rohingya and Bangladeshi boat-people were intercepted by the navy in Thai territorial waters between 18 and 30 December 2008 and were subsequently towed into international waters without navigational equipment or sufficient food and water and whereas many of them are missing and feared drowned,

Buthidaung Water Festival Program stalled suddenly

Buthidaung, Arakan State: The Buthidaung Water Festival Program of the Burmese New Year was suddenly shut down due to the behaviour of some army personnel on April 16, according to local sources.
 
The Water Festival Program is controlled by a local committee and the authority, with some conditions, in case a person wants to pour water on a woman on a stage, the source said.
