The Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) warmly congratulates His Excellency Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh.
President Alamgir is a highly experienced statesman with a long record of political leadership and public service. ARNO particularly appreciates his consistent concern for the Rohingya people. On World Refugee Day in 2025, he expressed his “sincere solidarity with all refugees in their struggle to survive with dignity.” He also called for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of the Rohingya with citizenship.
His principled position gives renewed hope to Rohingya refugees and genocide survivors. The Rohingya people expect President Alamgir to use the authority and moral influence of his office to keep the crisis high on Bangladesh’s national and international agenda.
A lasting solution must guarantee recognition of Rohingya identity, full citizenship, security, freedom of movement, restoration of land and property, and accountability for crimes committed against them. Rohingya representatives must also be included in all discussions concerning their future.
ARNO remains deeply grateful to the Government and people of Bangladesh for sheltering more than one million Rohingya refugees. We look forward to working with President Alamgir and Bangladesh toward a safe and sustainable return to the Rohingya homeland in Arakan.
