The village tract level administrative system, which has been in vogue in the SPDC military junta's regime since 1988, was recently dissolved in Arakan State, according to a local village administrator.

However, it is not clear whether the system has been dissolved by the military authorities throughout Burma, he said.
A former village tract chairman from Maungdaw Township said that the system was dissolved during Arakan State Vice-Chairman Lt. Col. Than Tun Aung's visit to northern Arakan State .
A number of army officials accompanied Lt. Col. Than Tun Aung during his five-day tour through three townships – Rathidaung, Buthidaun, and Maungdaw – in the north of the state from October 5 to 8.
He declared the system of village tract administration as dissolved, saying it would be substituted by another system.
The new village tract system will reportedly consist of one or two general administration committees formed by 10 villagers. The 10 villagers will be chosen by local villagers, said a source.
All village tracts from Maungdaw Township had to submit the names of 10 villagers for the new administrative committee to Lt. Col. Than Tun Aung, during a meeting he held with Maungdaw's village administration on October 7.
Earlier, the village tract administrative body comprised a Chairman and Secretary, along with seven committee members.
However, the current village tract committee and chairmen will remain in power until the new committees take over.
A village tract chairman also said that Lt. Col. Than Tun Aung said during the meeting that this was a preliminary step towards democracy in Burma, and Senior General Than Shwe will establish Burma as a democratic country during his tenure.
