The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed deep concern over injuries reportedly sustained by Rohingyas while they were demonstrating on Bhashan Char Island on Monday.

A group of Rohingyas demonstrated violently when UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations Raouf Mazou and UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Gillian Triggs were on a visit to Bhashan Char to observe different aspects of the island.
“Following today’s (Monday) visit of a UNHCR delegation, including the UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations and the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection to Bhasan Char, we are deeply concerned to learn of reports of refugees who have been injured during today’s events on the island,” said a statement forwarded by Louise Donovan, the communications officer of the Bangladesh chapter of UNHCR, on Monday night.
“We regret that those affected reportedly include children and women,” it said.
“The safety and wellbeing of refugees is our main priority and we continue to urgently seek additional information on the condition of those affected and urge that they receive adequate medical assistance,” said the statement.
During the visit, the UNHCR delegation was able to meet with a large group of refugees and to listen to the various issues that they raised, which the delegation will further discuss with the Bangladesh authorities, it said.
The delegation has now arrived in Cox’s Bazar and is scheduled to visit the Rohingya refugee camps tomorrow, Tuesday, before returning to Dhaka to meet with senior government officials, it added.
