The Saudi humanitarian airlift to Myanmar concluded today as the fifth and final plane arrived in Yangon Airport carrying more than 70 tons of relief materials.
The airlift began on May 25 to provide much-needed relief supplies to the victims of Cyclone Nargis. In total, the airlift delivered 370 tons of supplies on the directive of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.
Saudi Ambassador to Myanmar Turki Al-Ali was at the airport for the arrival of the final Saudi plane. He said the Kingdom is expected to dispatch additional relief aid to Myanmar by sea.
Myanmar officials on hand at the airport welcomed the Saudi aid. An official noted that of all the 35 nations who sent relief aid to the cyclone-stricken nation, the Kingdom’s relief shipments have been the largest.
The Kingdom is also currently airlifting relief supplies into China after a May 12 earthquake devastated much of Sichuan Province.
In related news, Saudi Arabia today donated $300,000 in aid to Eritrea to combat locusts. The aid included seven Toyota pickup trucks and 13 spraying devices.
