The response from the Government follows Sajjad’s calls earlier this month for urgent action to help prevent a potential humanitarian crisis unfolding.
In the letter to Sajjad, the Foreign Office highlights the British Government’s support for those in Burma fighting for democracy and their human rights, with specific reference to the minority Rohingya population: a stateless, ethnic and religious minority who were deprived of their nationality in 1982, and have since suffered systematic human rights abuses, including torture, displacement and starvation.
The letter, written by Jeremy Browne MP, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, states:
“The UK remains one of the most active and vocal members of the international community in raising these concerns with the Burmese authorities, and we will continue to do so. We have repeatedly called for the government to put an end to the violence, to allow unhindered humanitarian access to the areas affected, to resolve the issue of nationality and to grant the full respect for human rights to all the people of Burma, notably the Rohingya.”
