ARNO welcomes UNSC’s decision
The Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) sincerely welcomes the decision of the United Nations Security Council to place Burma on its formal agenda. It is appreciative that the groundbreaking item, which was adopted on 15 September 2006 with the support of ten member countries including the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Greece, Slovakia, Japan, Peru, Argentina, and Ghana, was proposed by the United States.
The decision is a message of hope and encouragement from the world’s highest body to the long suffering people of Burma, while it is forewarning to the Burmese military dictatorship to stop defying the international opinion and come to the sense to respect the democratic aspiration of the people.
The decision comes at the time when the people of Burma are facing serious political crisis with great humanitarian disaster and grave human rights violations. The ruling military SPDC is perpetuating crimes against humanity particularly in the ethnic areas and the Rohingya people of Arakan, who are arbitrarily made “defacto stateless”, are the worst victims.
We hope for a significant outcome, through the process of the United Nations system, leading to tripartite dialogue for a negotiated settlement of all problems.
