PRESS RELEASE
(13 November 2010)
STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF DAW AUNG SUU KYI
- We warmly welcome the release of Burma democracy icon Daw Aung San Suu Kyi today. The release was long overdue and her detention for 15 of the past 21 years was a mockery.
- Daw Suu, who was barred to participate at the military held November 7, 2010 elections, is a source of an inspiration for the people of Burma. The news of her release has outshined the common pain of the people over the false elections. In facts, her participation in these sham elections wouldn’t have any difference as they were based on SPDC’s 2008 undemocratic constitution which does not signify any political changes or democratic reforms excepting to consolidate the military rule with a civilian face.
- At this trying situation, all people of Burma, irrespective of race, religion and culture, need to stand by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, with a renewed Panlong spirit, in order to liberate the country from the yoke of the dictatorship for establishing a strong Burma Union based on federal democracy, universalism of human rights, and principles of equality.
- Last not least, given the past bad experiences, the international community should put effective pressure on the new regime:
- To ensure full freedom to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in carrying on her political activities;
- To be engaged in U.N. led genuine tripartite dialogue between the regime, democracy forces led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and representatives of the ethnic nationalities for a national accord with all inclusive political and democratic process.
