ARAKAN ROHINGYA NATIONAL ORGANISATION

ARAKAN, BURMA

Press Release

(18 August 2010)

Statement of ARNO on the junta’s election

Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) denounces the holding of a general election on November 7, 2010 by ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) without creating conducive political environment in Burma.

We reiterate that the upcoming election to be held under SPDC’s strange and undemocratic constitution and unjust laws cannot be inclusive and creditable under the current circumstances, when Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and more than 1200 political prisoners are still in incarceration, and basic rights and freedom of the people are under serious restrictions. The election will continue multiplying the suffering of the people of Burma without federal democracy.

Now the SPDC is trying to organize the Rohingya people of Arakan through false pretences while consistently confining them in sub-human condition, without rights of man.  The SPDC’s repressing functionaries like NaSaka, army and police have now become more ferocious against the Rohingya people in northern Arakan, committing rape, killings, looting, extortion and torture and arrest of the people on false and imaginary charges, and thus creating an impossible situation for their peaceful living.

We urge upon the international community, UN and all member states, including US, EU, ASEAN countries not to recognize the results of the fake elections.
