ARAKAN (Burma)
Date: June 18, 2005.
It has been 43 years that the people of Burma are experiencing untold miseries and sufferings under military dictatorship that has kept them in deepest darkness.
Persecution and oppression all over the country are daily phenomenon. Resultantly, there are 1,350 political prisoners, many of whom are routinely tortured, one million Internally Displaced People and over 600,000 refugees in records. Besides, like Shan and Mon refugees in Thailand, Kuki, Chin, Naga in India and Kachin in China etc. there are more than 600,000 undocumented Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh who were forced to leave their homeland of Arakan by the Burmese military.
Today the world is commemorating the 60 th. Birth Day of Burma democracy leader Noble Peace Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been kept under house arrest since the Depayin Massacre on May 30, 2003, and is barred from taking part in her own occasion. It is a manmade tragedy and is a misery for the whole peace-loving peoples of the world. The Burmese military are heedless to the repeated demands of the international community to release Daw Suu and bring about democratic reforms in the country.
However, although she has to stay in isolated home, her heart is meeting with people as hearts of the Burmese people are burning for her release and restoration of democracy in the country.
On this occasion, we urge upon the international community to take the following immediate measures:
– To put more effective pressures on the ruling SPDC to unconditionally release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners, including U Tin Oo and U Kyaw Min, who is a Rohingya MP and a member of CRPP without further theft of time;
– To call a halt to the SPDC to stop all sorts of oppressions, persecution and exterminatory policies against ethnic minorities and to treat the ethnic Rohingya as an indigenous people of Arakan and therefore Burma;
– To disqualify the Burmese military dictatorship from the chairmanship of the ASEAN Chairmanship.
