Teknaf, Bangladesh:  A tailoring training centre for men was opened in the Nayapara Burmese refugee camp yesterday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Male refugees will be trained in tailoring.
In 1999, a women’s tailoring centre was set up in Nayapara refugee camp, which has been imparting training to women refugees. Some of the women trainers have been appointed by the UNHCR and they provide training to other new women trainees. The trainers also sew clothes of refugees without any payment. The trainers get 20 kilograms of rice per month as support from UNHCR. During festivals, the trainers sew the clothes of refugees and take one taka per piece of
clothes stitched, said a Majee from the camp.
Yesterday, the sub-head of the UNHCR Mr. Jim, RRRC (Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission) officer, programme director of TAI, project manager of TAI (Technical Assistance Institute), and others inaugurated the men’s tailoring centre in the Nayapara camp in Cox’s Bazaar district, Bangladesh.
At the inauguration the first programme director said, the tailors appointed would teach tailoring methods to learners (trainees). He also expressed happiness that
after a long time a “men’s centre for tailoring” could  be opened. He hoped that refugees would learn tailoring successfully and utilize the training in future,” said a schoolteacher of the refugee camp.
Some other participants also spoke about future development of refugees at the inauguration ceremony.
The men’s centre for tailoring was beautifully decorated by TAI members before the inauguration.##
