India will open a consulate at Sittwe, a sea port on the Myanmarese flank of the Bay of Bengal, becoming the first country to have three missions in the country. China and India have their embassies in the national capital and consulates in Mandalay.

A history of ‘complete repression’ in Arakan state

Ethnic cleansing does not have to, by definition, emanate from a government.

However after nearly 50 years of military rule, the apparatus of the state is entrenched in the fabric of Burmese society and as the pogrom continues in Arakan state, the back story provides unnerving evidence that systematic official behavior has lead to the current crisis.

It asks “race” and then says “Rohingya”,’ says the 68-year-old, touching his chest with one hand while with the other pointing to a photocopied identity card dating from 1974.

Dire condition of Rohingya camps, need to improve: Valerie Amos

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos has described the conditions for thousands of displaced Rohingya IDPs camps in western Burma, are dire and called Burmese authority to improve the camp urgently on December 5.

“Warning signs” are in place for a genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, an Al Jazeera investigation has been told by a leading expert in the field.
 
According to Professor William Schabas, until recently President of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, the findings of an Al Jazeera documentary reveal that “we’re moving into a zone where the word can be used”.

UN, Burmese Officials Discuss Rohingya Citizenship

BANGKOK — The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator,Valerie Amos, is meeting with Burma’s President Thein Sein after visiting displaced peoples camps in Rakhine and Kachin states.  Amos is expected to discuss the sensitive issue of citizenship for the Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority, as well as improving conditions and aid access in the camps.
