Stateless Rohingyas pin hope on PM Manmohan’s visit
Gautam Debroy, New Delhi (May 26): When Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be reaching Naypyidaw on Sunday for a three-day official visit, majority of Rohingya refugees living in India, with a good number of their presence in Northeastern states, will be hoping for an early return to their home at Arakan region of Myanmar.

NEW DELHI: Hands clasped behind his back, Nazeer Ahmad stands stiff. He’s in a lungi, kurta and skullcap at the edge of a huddle of men speaking to a reporter in the shade of a barely-there tin sheet propped up on bamboo stilts. Listless as he stands on a dusty, barren plot at southeast Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar, he doesn’t join the group. Only when the reporter moves away, he steps up.
Burma: Census Risks Marginalising Rohingya

Burma’s landmark census planned for 2014 is likely to exclude and further isolate its Rohingya minority group, which has been denied citizenship by the government since 1982.
Although the government has agreed to include all “national races” in the census, the 1.5 million Muslim minority group does not fall under this category and campaigners worry they will be left out.

Rohingya welcome Indian Government’s decision and request to grant official refugee status to Rohingya asylum seekers
The undersigned Rohingya organisations have welcomed the decision of the Indian government to grant long-term visas to the Rohingyas. The UNHCR called it “a huge step forward for their protection and safety in India”.

2014 Census in Burma must be universal and inclusive of Rohingya
Recently the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA) has agreed to support Burma’s proposed 2014 population and housing census. But ‘Rights groups worry that if not conducted properly, the census could marginalize minorities such as the Rohingya or those living in one of Burma’s many conflict areas.’
No true census has ever been taken in Burma, and great injustice has been done to the ethnic Rohingyas. The government of U Thein Sein is beyond exception. His current wind of change has not touched the Rohingyas yet. Rather racist and xenophobic plans have been patronized and projected against them.

Introduction Mr. Chairman, Mr. Faleomavaega, and Members of the Subcommittee, thank you very much for inviting me here today to testify about U.S. policy toward Burma and the remarkable developments that have been unfolding in the country. Many Members of this Committee and in the Congress have been key proponents of human rights and democracy in Burma over the past two decades, and I am sure you all are following events with as much hope and interest as we do at the State Department.

NLD opens new office in Maungdaw Township

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The National League for Democracy (NLD) has opened a branch office in Maungdaw Township – a border town of Burma with Bangladesh and the border town of northern Arakan state, on April 25 at about 8:00am, according to a student who attended the opening ceremony of NLD New office.
